Hi

I know there may not be any real plans for this yet, but would you not think it is about time

to develop the app for Antroid as well as for Windows CE? There are so many 7 to 10in tablets

coming out and less and less new WindowsCe devices. And certainly you cannot afford to wait

too long and miss the ship?

What do you think?

i would not prefer the iphone etc..as it is one closed system from one single company..whereas Antroid is open to many suppliers and many more devices will come up in the future

Therefore it makes to develop on this system if any.

How many Android devices have sold in the last year compared to how many PCs, laptops and netbooks?

We are not about to stop development on SkyDemon so that we can take six months to write it for another platform whose numbers are not yet significant enough to make it worth it. This applies to iPad, Android and anything else non-PC. When the numbers make sense, then it will make sense.

Just to share my humble oppinion. I really love the SD, and im thrilled i finally got my mobile running on a PNA i got hold of, but here goes, my 2ps worth;

I really think one has to differ between the plan and mobile when discussing this.

While searching for a protable device to run the mobile version, (lets face it, not that many who want to drag the whole laptop into the plane, and since net-boards came along, development of the traditional tablet has been low)
As i discovered trying to find a suitable unit to run mobile on, 99% of all 7 and 10 inch netboards, is either iPads or some other brand. Then again 99% of the other brands are andoroid based units.

I've had close to no luck to find a unit running win-ce to use in-flight. Theres dosens of android-versions out there and the iPad as well for that matter.

We are today mainly discussing use of PNAs since many of those run on ce. On the other hand, since in-car navigation system are getting standard equipment on most cars, i really belive fewer and fewer people will own a PNA. One could of-course buy one to use with SD, but im thinking why do i have to buy another one when i got my galaxy tab or iPad or whatever anyway??

Im guessing that folks using mac computers tend to get the iPad, and those of us not too fond of apple market strategy uses win-based computers. Ive got a android phone, and im thinking then android if i were to get a net-board. (the wife is all apple, iPhone, MacBook computer and now also an iPad, and theres not that many thigs shes able to do, that my laptop or phone cant do as-well, but lets not turn this into the usual "to mac or NoMac discussion".)

I think people will in near future posess the nesceserry hardware for in-flight nav in the form of a netboard. Up until now this wold have been the PNA.

This makes me conclude that the one offering a solution with planning on Win-pc and mobile on android or plan on OSX and moblile on iPad is the one who will succseed.

I completely understand Tim and his statement, but i really belive the lack of hardware among potential users is the reason for not buying. If i was offered a solution to use with whatever hardware i already have, id buy it in a hartbeat. This hardware will be netboards and computers as far as i can understand.

Best regards,

Kevin from Norway (sorry for my bad english)

Kevin,

Your English is not at all bad and your logic is perfect.  I think the production cycle of Win CE devices will be relatively short and the risk for SD is that there will be a shortage of choice for mobile platforms.

I too understand Tim's assessment but it might turn out to be short sighted if Android becomes the operating system of choice for future mobile devices.

hello

this is exactly my point. I understand you need to consolidate the product you have and not go chase after every new operating system that comes along.

however CE is a thing of the past for the mobile version. The Plan version should remain on a proper computer. However I have not found a mobile device that runs CE, has a big screen and also Wireless to download weather etc

Also I have not found a WindowsXP device that has a decent screen and GPS, but has wireless.

Looking at the antroid deviced in comparison they have 3G or wireless, a good 7-10in screen size and almost always GPS - thus make them very suitable for the mobile version of Skydemon.

Tim is is not to critise what you have done, just wanted to note that Antroid will make for good replacement device. Unless Windows 8 will be able to run on ARM devices or Windows 7 Embedded and will be a replacement for GPS units currently running CE. However I understand that every operating system after Windows CE or Windows Mobile 6.5 will also use another programmig language and which would also mean you would have to start again Sad

Here is a 10" device which runs Windows 7 (Mobile), has wireles and will accept a 3G dongle if you are out of range of wireless.

If you know where to look, there are quite a few of these devices out there which support Windows CE, Windows 7 and Android. Furthermore, if you know what you are doing most of them can be re-flashed from one operating system to another or even made to dual-boot.

Screetch, there are more WinCE devices being produced now than ever before. Additionally I believe Microsoft have confirmed that Windows 8 will run on ARM chipsets.

Note that it's only Windows Phone 7 that won't run WinCE software, because it's been specially adapted by the phone team not to do so. That's fine; by and large, people don't want to be navigating aircraft on a 3.5" mobile phone screen. Windows CE continues to be one of the most powerful and capable embedded operating systems out there, with no end in sight to its development, and that's why we write SkyDemon Mobile for that platform.
